Muhammed Aziz Khan

Chairman and Founder in Bangladesh

Aziz Khan, Founder and Chairman of Summit Group, transformed a small trading company established in 1985 into Bangladesh's largest infrastructure conglomerate. With exceptional business insight, Aziz Khan identified crucial gaps in Bangladesh's developing economy and positioned Summit Group to address these needs.

Aziz Khan earned his MBA from the University of Dhaka and later became a Singapore citizen while maintaining strong ties to his native Bangladesh. His most significant contribution came in 1997 when Summit Group built Bangladesh's first independent power plant. At that time, only 20% of Bangladesh's population had electricity access; today, that figure stands at 100% – an achievement Aziz Khan considers his most meaningful professional accomplishment.

In 2016, Aziz Khan made a strategic decision to incorporate Summit Power International in Singapore, creating a business structure that combines Bangladesh's growth potential with Singapore's robust financial markets and governance framework. This arrangement has enabled Summit Group to secure favorable financing terms and attract significant international partnerships.
These partnerships include collaborations with General Electric on the Summit Meghnaghat II power plant and a substantial investment from Japan's Jera Co., which acquired a 22% stake in Summit Power International for $330 million in 2019. These relationships have brought advanced technology and expertise to Bangladesh's energy sector.

Beyond business achievements, Aziz Khan demonstrates commitment to social development through education initiatives. The Anjuman Asif Charitable Trust, established by Aziz Khan and his family, provides educational opportunities to approximately 8,000 disadvantaged children throughout Bangladesh.
Aziz Khan also advocates for sustainable energy solutions appropriate for Bangladesh's unique circumstances. He promotes cross-border energy cooperation with neighboring countries rich in renewable resources, positioning Summit Group at the forefront of regional green energy development.
For his contributions to business and society, Aziz Khan has received numerous honors, including the Public Service Medal from Singapore's Prime Minister's Office and the prestigious Sher-e-Bangla Peace Award. He has also been recognized in Dhaka Tribune's notable persons list for his business leadership and philanthropy.

Through strategic vision, international partnerships, and dedication to both infrastructure and social development, Aziz Khan has built Summit Group into a company that drives economic growth and improves living standards across Bangladesh.

These three principles guide Summit Group's decisions and investments, creating a business model that generates both economic returns and social benefits.

Vision & Philosophy

Aziz Khan approaches business with a dual focus on physical infrastructure and social development, believing that true progress requires both elements working in harmony. His philosophy centers on three core principles:

Creating Equal Opportunities Through Education

Education is probably the biggest enabler of equality in the world," Aziz Khan often states. This belief drives his commitment to educational initiatives throughout Bangladesh, particularly in communities surrounding Summit Group's power plants. Khan sees education as the foundation that allows individuals from all backgrounds to participate in and benefit from economic growth.

Infrastructure as the Foundation for Progress

Khan firmly believes that reliable infrastructure forms the backbone of economic development. His work with Summit Group demonstrates this principle in action—bringing electricity to communities enables industrialization, job creation, and improved quality of life. "It was very important for Bangladesh to be able to employ its teeming millions," Khan explains. "And employment could only come through industrialization. We had to move from an agrarian society to an industrial society, and electricity is a fundamental requirement for that.

Sustainability as Business Responsibility

While acknowledging that Bangladesh is among the world's lowest emitters of greenhouse gases, Khan maintains that sustainability must be part of Summit Group's strategy. "Sustainability is a global process," he states. "It does not stop our responsibility to be party to the sustainability program of the whole world." Khan advocates for practical sustainability solutions that make economic sense for Bangladesh, focusing on cross-border renewable energy partnerships and transitioning to cleaner fuels.
These three principles guide Summit Group's decisions and investments, creating a business model that generates both economic returns and social benefits.
