Sustainable Energy Vision

Aziz Khan approaches sustainability with pragmatism, recognizing both global environmental imperatives and Bangladesh's specific economic constraints. His vision for sustainable energy centers on several key principles:

Cross-Border Renewable Solutions

Khan champions regional cooperation to address Bangladesh's renewable energy challenges. He recognizes that Bangladesh's high population density and limited land availability make large-scale domestic solar or wind farms impractical. Instead, he advocates for bringing renewable electricity from neighboring countries with abundant resources.

"There is a lot of availability of green electricity in South Asia," Khan notes. "We need to harness them and bring it to Bangladesh." His vision includes partnerships with India, Bhutan, and Nepal to create a regional grid that can supply Bangladesh with renewable energy.

Natural Gas as Transition Fuel

While pursuing renewable options, Khan has positioned Summit Group to utilize natural gas as a cleaner transition fuel compared to oil or coal. The company has developed expertise in efficient combined cycle gas turbines and operates Bangladesh's second floating storage and regasification unit for liquefied natural gas.

Economic Sustainability

Khan emphasizes that sustainability solutions must make economic sense for Bangladesh's developing economy. "It has to make economic sense," he states. "When renewables cost less than fossil fuel-based electricity, then people will switch to renewables."

This approach reflects his understanding that Bangladesh is "a very cost-sensitive economy" that requires affordable energy solutions to support continued growth.

Summit's Climate Action Plan

Under Khan's leadership, Summit Power International has developed a formal climate action plan with specific targets:

  • Reducing scope 1 and 2 emission intensity 10% by 2030 (compared to 2021 baseline).

  • Adding 100 megawatts of renewable generation by 2030.

  • Deriving 40% of energy generation from clean sources by 2040.

  • Achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, aligning with partner Jera's targets.

Khan has also committed Summit to no longer developing new liquid fuel-fired power plants in Bangladesh, focusing instead on cleaner alternatives.

Technology and Innovation

Khan sees technology, particularly artificial intelligence, as crucial to addressing climate challenges. "We need to harness artificial intelligence to contain emissions, to bring about re-nurturing Mother Earth so that each and every aspect of Mother Earth, from its soil to its environment, improves," he states.

Through this multifaceted approach, Khan positions Summit Group to contribute to both Bangladesh's development and global sustainability efforts in practical, economically viable ways.
