1985: Humble Beginnings

●    Aziz Khan establishes Summit Group as a trading company in newly independent Bangladesh.
●    Khan identifies entrepreneurial opportunities in a developing economy with few established business leaders.

1990s: Entry into Infrastructure
  • Summit Group expands beyond trading to address Bangladesh's critical infrastructure needs.

  • 1995: Develops port-related facilities, including Bangladesh's first inland container depot.

  • 1997-98: Constructs Bangladesh's first independent power plant, marking Summit's entry into the energy sector when only 20% of the population had electricity access.

2000s: Growth and Diversification
  • Continues expanding power generation capacity throughout Bangladesh.

  • Develops expertise in combined cycle power plants and other efficient energy technologies.

  • Establishes Summit Communications for fiber optic infrastructure.

  • Creates additional port and terminal facilities.

2011-2015: Consolidation and Expansion
  • Summit Power Limited becomes one of Bangladesh's leading publicly traded companies.

  • Expands power generation portfolio with multiple new plants.

  • Develops expertise in liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.

2016: Strategic Internationalization
  • Establishes Summit Power International (SPI) in Singapore.

  • Partners with International Finance Corporation (IFC) in a deal representing one of the largest foreign investments in Bangladesh at the time.

  • Creates structure to access international capital markets and governance frameworks.

2019: Major International Partnership
  • Japan's Jera Co. acquires 22% stake in Summit Power International for $330 million.

  • Strengthens Summit's position as an attractive destination for foreign direct investment.

2020s: Sustainable Growth Focus
  • Develops sustainability strategy targeting reduced emission intensity.

  • Commits to adding 100 megawatts of renewable generation by 2030.

  • Works toward making the portfolio 40% clean energy by 2040.

  • Explores cross-border renewable energy solutions with neighboring countries.

  • Continues to strengthen Bangladesh's energy infrastructure while expanding regional presence.

Today, Summit Group stands as Bangladesh's largest infrastructure conglomerate, employing over 6,000 people with investments spanning energy, ports, fiber optics, and communications technology. From a simple trading operation, Khan has built a business that provides essential services to millions while contributing to Bangladesh's rapid development.
